Mishkon is the historic heart of Jewish life in Venice, located a few blocks from the ocean. Over the past few years, we have successfully maintained our thriving preschool and enhanced learning opportu­nities, launched new initiatives targeting engage­ment of different demographics, piloted unique programs internally, and branched out into the local Venice and Main Street communities!

Game's Day 
Monday, August 18  1:30 - 3:30 a.m.
Mishkon hosts Games Day once a month and everyone is welcome! Mahjong players, bring your cards. Chess players, bring your chess game. You can bring your own favorite game or a game you want to try out. We will also have Rummykub, Scrabble, Big Boggle, and Dominos.

Preschool Open House and Family Shabbat

Your preschool search ends here! The Preschool at Mishkon, in Venice, is opening its doors to families considering the Preschool at Mishkon. It will be a fun-filled evening for the whole family where parents can explore Mishkon's Jewish preschool, connect with our community, let their child experience our students’ engaging enrichment activities, and enjoy a musical family Shabbat with Rabbi Katzan and Happie Hoffman! 
 
Family Shabbat with Happie Hoffman
Friday, August 22  4:45 - 5 p.m.
Join us as Rabbi Katzan and our special guest, Happie Hoffman, lead a musical and engaging Family Shabbat. Every Friday, our preschoolers bake challah and gather for Rock Shabbat — an energetic celebration filled with singing and dancing. Rabbi Katzan performs their favorite interactive Shabbat songs and leads prayers that our preschoolers know by heart! Our guest, Happie Hoffman, is a renowned singer-songwriter who is pausing her world tour to visit Mishkon.
 
Kabbalat Shabbat Services and Dinner with Happie Hoffman
Friday, August 22  6 p.m.
Kabbalat Shabbat services with Happie Hoffman have quickly become a cherished Mishkon event. A gifted singer-songwriter with operatic training, Happie has earned both national and international recognition for her joyful, soul-stirring Jewish music. 
We’re thrilled that Happie will pause her world travels to return to Mishkon and join Rabbi Joshua Katzan for Kabbalat Shabbat services and dinner.
 
Volunteer with Our Big Kitchen Los Angeles
Sunday, August 24  10 a.m - 12 p.m.
Mishkon's Social Action Committee is volunteering at Our Big Kitchen Los Angeles. OBKLA unites volunteers to cook and package meals for those facing hardship. These meals are then provided to social service organizations for distribution.
This event is at capacity.
 
Shabbat on the Beach
 5:30 - 7 p.m.Friday, September 5 
Bring a friend or the whole family! Warm your toes in the sand, and join your community in singing and celebrating the joys of a magical Shabbat experience. Challah and grape juice will be provided for services. Feel free to bring your own instruments to join Rabbi Katzan during Shabbat on the Beach. Make sure to bring beach chairs, blankets, jackets, and your own dinner if you plan to picnic on the beach afterward.
 

It's never too late to continue learning and growing, and Mishkon Tephilo offers various adult education opportunities for individuals to explore and deepen their understanding of Jewish traditions, texts, and practices. With classes offered both in-person and online, participants can choose what best fits their schedule and learning preferences.

The Art of Cantillation
Rabbi Dan is training members in rendering the Torah text in a musically pleasing and grammatically faithful performance. Interested Mishkonians should contact Rabbi Dan at dan@shevitz.net.
 
Chug Rashi
First Shabbat of the Month (on hiatus)
Chug Rashi meets at Mishkon Tephilo after kiddush to explore the weekly Torah portion through Rashi's commentaries. Longtime member Jeff Fleck, who has a doctorate in Comparative Literature, leads the engaging discussions.

Community Scholar Program
Mishkon has become a partner organization with the Orange County Jewish Community Scholar Program. Programs are recorded and available for viewing on the occsp.net website. Everything is free to Mishkon members. Click here to learn more.

Join Mishkon Tephilo for heimisch, warm, and engaging Shabbat services led by Rabbi Katzan and the Mishkon community. Whether new to Hebrew or well-versed in liturgy, the music and practice of our service will quickly feel like the warm embrace of a trusted friend, enhanced by helpful tips from members and the rabbi. All are welcome to attend Kabbalat Shabbat and candle lighting on Friday or Shabbat morning services on Saturday.

Join the Mishkon community on Saturday morning for a heimisch, warm, and engaging Shabbat service. After the Shabbat service, all are welcome to join our Kiddush.

Fiddler on the Roof in Yiddish
Saturday September 13 and Sunday September 14
In 2018, New York-based National Yiddish Theatre Folksbiene translated the script and lyrics of Fiddler on the Roof into Yiddish with English supertitles. For a taste of the New York experience, the Soraya Performing Arts Center is bringing a concert version (not the full production) to the West Coast for the first time. 
 
East Meets West: A World of Jewish Music

Wilshire Ebell Theatre of Los Angeles proudly welcomes the Los Angeles Jewish Symphony for an unforgettable afternoon of music and cultural celebration. A World of Jewish Music is a 90-minute musical journey through the global traditions of Jewish communities—from the spirited Klezmer and Yiddish melodies of Eastern Europe to the rich, resonant tones of Sephardic and Mizrahi music rooted in Spain, North Africa, the Middle East, and beyond.
