Mishkon is the historic heart of Jewish life in Venice, located a few blocks from the ocean. Over the past few years, we have successfully maintained our thriving preschool and enhanced learning opportunities, launched new initiatives targeting engagement of different demographics, piloted unique programs internally, and branched out into the local Venice and Main Street communities!

Mishkon is hosting a song-filled and accessible service followed by Kabbalat Shabbat dinner for Jews in their 20s-30s in partnership with OneTable.

Havdalah
Saturday, January 24
6:30 - 8 p.m.
Rabbi Joshua Katzan will host the ceremony that marks the symbolic end of Shabbat and ushers in the new week. The ritual involves lighting a special havdalah candle with several wicks, blessing a cup of wine, and smelling sweet spices. Shabbat ends on Saturday night after the appearance of three stars in the sky. This event is for members only. RSVP here.
Shabbat Shira - Service and Dinner

6 - 7:30 p.m.
Join us to support Rabbinic Intern Lily Gross as she leads a joyful, music-filled service for the Shabbat of Song, followed by a delicious community dinner. Sign up for dinner by Wednesday, January 28. Services are free. Dinner is $36 for Mishkon members and $46 for non-members.

Tot Shabbat and Kiddush

Tour of Westwood Greenway
Sunday, February 1
10:30 - 11 a.m.
Mishkon will be celebrating Tu B'Shvat
with a 30-minute walking tour through the Westwood Neighborhood Greenway. The Westwood Greenway cleans water while providing a native habitat for birds, butterflies, and other animals. We will learn about the history of the site and discuss what we can do now to help make our city a better place for animals and people.

Tu B'Shvat Seder
Monday, February 2

Join us for a delicious Tu B’shvat Seder, an ancient ritual of eating, drinking, singing, and exploring how our connection to nature affects us physically, emotionally, intellectually, and spiritually. We will have something for everyone including a family-friendly Tu B'Shvat experience, dinner with the community, and of course, our Tu B'Shvat Seder! Rabbi Katzan will lead us with questions, short teachings, songs, and ways to encounter the mystery of creation.

Save the date! You don't want to miss Mishkon's Annual Gala. This year's Gala honorees will be longtime Mishkonians Ann and Barry Steinberg and Shiri and Yoni Sassoon.

It's never too late to continue learning and growing, and Mishkon Tephilo offers various adult education opportunities for individuals to explore and deepen their understanding of Jewish traditions, texts, and practices. With classes offered both in-person and online, participants can choose what best fits their schedule and learning preferences.

First Shabbat of the Month (on hiatus)
Chug Rashi meets at Mishkon Tephilo after kiddush to explore the weekly Torah portion through Rashi's commentaries. Longtime member Jeff Fleck, who has a doctorate in Comparative Literature, leads the engaging discussions.

Join Mishkon Tephilo for heimisch, warm, and engaging Shabbat services led by Rabbi Katzan and the Mishkon community. Whether new to Hebrew or well-versed in liturgy, the music and practice of our service will quickly feel like the warm embrace of a trusted friend, enhanced by helpful tips from members and the rabbi. All are welcome to attend Kabbalat Shabbat and candle lighting on Friday or Shabbat morning services on Saturday.

The 41st Annual Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Celebration
The Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Westside Coalition will be hosting the 41st annual celebration of Dr. King and his legacy. The theme for 2026 is “Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere" and will feature keynote speaker Bonnie Boswell, who is an Emmy Award-winning producer. The Community Involvement Fair will begin immediately after the main celebration at 10:30 a.m. Mishkon's Social Action Committee will have a booth at the fair, which will give our larger Santa Monica and Venice community the opportunity to meet us!
