What is JRP?
JRP (Jewish Roots Project) is a weekly, drop-off after-school program for children ages 4–6 (TK through 1st grade) that nurtures connection, creativity, and community through fun and relatable exploration of Jewish culture. It's also a great way to stay connected to your Mishkon preschool friends after you graduate, and make new ones along the way!

Each Wednesday afternoon, kids will learn a mini lesson from Rabbi Joshua Katzan (that will surely include some music!), followed by alternating creative workshops. Every week, they’ll engage in either process art (led by Rachel Woodbridge from ARTWELL or hands-on cooking (led by Shiri Sassoon). They’ll be fully immersed in modern Jewish culture, singing music, tasting traditional cuisine, creating meaningful art, and strengthening their connections to their roots.

What will my kids be doing?
  Creative journaling and hands-on projects
  Hebrew language play and learning
  Storytelling, music, and movement
Tactile, seasonal activities celebrating Jewish holidays and values
Pizza dinner with new and old friends in a warm, inclusive space

What makes JRP unique?

Inspired by the spirit of Mishkon Preschool, JRP welcomes children of all backgrounds and faiths. This is a modern, playful, and meaningful approach to Jewish education—designed to foster curiosity, belonging, and joy. At this fun young age, we're really focusing on exposure more than anything else.

Religious School at Mishkon

Mishkon is committed to providing a meaningful and engaging educational experience for students of all backgrounds and levels of experience. Our Religious School program is centered on Jewish traditions, Hebrew language skills, and values. We focus on cultivating a deep sense of identity and connection with our rich tradition, and we give our students a foundation of skills and experiences to build on as they mature. We hope to instill the sense that Judaism grows up with us and its wisdom will guide and add goodness, decency, and richness to our lives.

Bar/Bat Mitzvah Preparation

The Bar/Bat Mitzvah, the ancient Jewish rite of passage at age 13, marks the beginning of adolescence, the age when people become responsible for fulfilling the mitzvot, the obligations of Judaism and Torah, all on their own. Watching our children move on from "childhood" toward responsibility is beautiful, and we celebrate that by guiding children to develop the skills necessary to independently read and lead as much of the service and Torah readings as they are able. It is also important for them to experience feeling useful to the community beyond the family, so the B'nai mitzvah participate in a community service project of personal meaning and interest.

What if a family wakes up one morning and realizes their children are nearly of-age, having missed years of the Religious School experience? Not to worry! At Mishkon, we welcome everyone regardless of background or experience. We also emphasize that the Bar/Bat Mitzvah should not be the end but rather the beginning of developing an adult relationship with our deep and inspiring tradition. Contact Rabbi Katzan for more information on the post-Bar/Bat Mitzvah education program that keeps up with and engages the child's rapidly developing mind.
