Social Action Committee

Mishkon Tephilo's Social Action Committee works to engage our members in helping those in our local community meet their basic needs. This committee is an opportunity for members to get to know one another better, develop friendships, and work enthusiastically on projects.

This committee regularly volunteers to deliver food with Meals on Wheels, serve breakfast to the homeless at the St. Joseph's Center Bread and Roses Cafe, distribute lunch and kibbitz with seniors at the Jewish Family Service Bar Center, and prepare meals with Our Big Kitchen Los Angeles. We also sponsor a table at the Annual Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration, participate in Santa Monica Beach Cleanups, garden in the Safe Place for Youth's Garden, organize food, toy, and clothing drives, and so much more!

To join the Social Action Committee, contact the Mishkon office at 310-392-3029 or office@mishkon.org, or email chair Sandy Solomon at solomonlcsw@gmail.com.

Membership and Chesed

Mishkon Tephilo's Membership Committee works to build a warm, welcoming, and inclusive community for all who walk through our doors. We aim to help members to connect with one another while helping grow and strengthen our synagogue community.

The Membership Committee welcomes new and prospective members, hosts outreach events, and helps ensure that Mishkon’s membership structure reflects the range of backgrounds, life stages, and circumstances within our community. Through personal connection and thoughtful engagement, we aim to make Mishkon a place where everyone feels they belong.

To learn more, contact the Mishkon office at 310-392-3029 or
office@mishkon.org, or email chair Rachel Berger at membership@mishkon.org.

Building and Grounds Committee

Mishkon Tephilo has a rich history. Our Articles of Incorporation are dated 1917, and the congregation’s first recorded board meeting was held in 1918. Our first facility was built in 1922, and our current location was dedicated in 1948.

In 2002, Mishkon leaders made a commitment to preserve the historic elements of its temple building—such as the original wall tiles, the stained-glass windows, and the mural work that is still largely hidden.

The Building and Grounds Committee offers an opportunity for people who like to take on a project or two (of smaller or larger scope, as they choose) and then run with it. Some projects involve working with staff and/or contractors and other vendors. There are few committee meetings and a lot of autonomy, after initial parameters are agreed on. If this prospect appeals to you, please get in touch via the office.

To join the Building and Grounds Committee, contact the Mishkon office at 310-392-3029 or office@mishkon.org, or email co-chair David Stein at thatsteinguy@aol.com.
