Mishkon is Celebrating 75 Years on Main Street

Mishkon Tephilo has a rich history. Our Articles of Incorporation are dated 1917, and the congregation’s first recorded board meeting was held in 1918. Among the founders of Mishkon was the great-grandfather of our current rabbi, Joshua Katzan, who was also the first president of Mishkon. Our first facility was built in 1922, and our current location was dedicated in 1948. We became the first Conservative synagogue in the Western United States to be led by a female rabbi when the congregation hired Rabbi Naomi Levy in 1989. She served until 1996.

"Two women members of the temple, tore a long ribbon apart on the steps and the procession filed inside." -The Los Angeles Times, September 1948
