Injustice Illuminated: The Hagaddah and Nazi Resistance Art of Arthur Szyk

This presentation discusses European Jewry through the art of Arthur Szyk, the leading artist for Jewish rescue in America during the Holocaust. This talk will also cover Szyk’s famous Haggadah and demonstrate how the artist saw Hitler as the new Pharaoh and the Nazis as the new Egyptians who had come to annihilate his people.

Arthur Szyk (b. 1894, Lodz, Poland — d. 1951, New Canaan, Connecticut) worked in Poland, France, England, Canada, and the United States, and was renowned during the first half of the twentieth century for his prolific illustrations in books, newspapers, and magazines.

Irvin Ungar, a former pulpit rabbi and antiquarian bookseller, has devoted the past quarter-century to scholarship on Arthur Szyk. Ungar has also served as the curator of the Arthur Szyk Society in Burlingame, California. Irvin’s memoir on his life with Arthur Szyk, Reviving the Artist Who Fought Hitler, will be published by the University of Texas Press in 2026.

Paperback reproductions of the Szyk Haggadah can be purchased online for $17 - $19.
