Mishkon is the historic heart of Jewish life in Venice, located a few blocks from the ocean. Over the past few years, we have successfully maintained our thriving preschool and enhanced learning opportu­nities, launched new initiatives targeting engage­ment of different demographics, piloted unique programs internally, and branched out into the local Venice and Main Street communities!

Shabbat on the Beach
Friday, September 5  5:30 - 7 p.m.
Bring a friend or the whole family! Warm your toes in the sand, and join your community in singing and celebrating the joys of a magical Shabbat experience. Challah and grape juice will be provided for services. Feel free to bring your own instruments to join Rabbi Katzan during Shabbat on the Beach. Make sure to bring beach chairs, blankets, jackets, and your own dinner if you plan to picnic on the beach afterward.
 
Mishkon Open Table

Preparing for the High Holy Days with Rabbi Katzan
Putting ourselves into alignment with our purpose, with our potential, is a meaningful cornerstone of the spiritual path of Judaism. Join Rabbi Katzan for a session of Jewish chiropractic exercises, including text study, discussion, and personal reflection, to prepare for the upcoming High Holy Days.
Rosh Hashanah Sephardic Seder
Penina Meghnagi Solomon will share insights into the longstanding Sephardic and Mizrahi custom of the Rosh Hashanah seder, a ritual meal held before the festive holiday dinner, with recipes and tastings to enjoy. Penina was born in Tripoli, Libya, and later lived in Italy and Israel and now in Los Angeles.
 
Baby and Me Fridays

Led by Parker Bent
Each week, one of our wonderful local community partners will join us for a fun and interactive baby and me class. Parker Bent is LA based artists who has perfected the art of kids music!One of the highlights of Parker’s performances is his audience inclusion. His easy-going sense of humor gets adults and children laughing, and his charm woos even the most shy little ones up on stage to sing into the mic.

Each week, one of our wonderful local community partners will join us for a fun and interactive baby and me class. Mimo is a mobile kids’ gym offering joyful, age-based movement classes who's sessions are built for developmental milestones whether your little one is cruising, climbing, or sprinting.

Tashlich 
Sunday, September 28  10:30 a.m. - 12 p.m.
Tashlich is a ceremonial casting away of our mistakes from the previous year to make room for hope, as we toss crumbs from our pockets into the sea (or more environmentally friendly seaweed gathered from the beach). It is a joyous event so bring your friends and family and a picnic lunch to the gathering at Lifeguard Station 28.

Each week, one of our wonderful local community partners will join us for a fun and interactive baby and me class. ARTWELL was created to spark imagination and creativity through fun and engaging art experiences for all ages. These workshops provide a nurturing environment for self-expression, fine-motor-skills development, confidence building, and emotional regulation/mindfulness.
 
Yom Kippur  The Day of Atonement
Atonement is a heartfelt desire for forgiveness, to clear the slate, take responsibility for what we can, and course-correct toward a more fruitful and meaningful life. Mishkon’s distinctive Yom Kippur services begin with the grandeur of Kol Nidre and crest with our soul-stirring Ne’ilah (concluding service).

Sukkot at Home

Join your community to celebrate Shabbat and Sukkot in each other's homes. Sign up to host or be a guest, and we’ll match you with fellow Mishkonians for a shared dinner and conversation. This is a chance to meet new people, enjoy delicious food, and spend a relaxed evening experiencing the joy of Shabbat together.
 
Simchat Torah
The finale of the High Holy Days is celebrated by concluding the reading of the Torah, then immediately starting the cycle over with the first words of Genesis, "In the beginning, God created ..." We will dance and sing to celebrate the Torah, our Book of Teachings, and then gather for a celebratory luncheon. It's a great way to bring the season to a joyous conclusion.

Simchat Torah BBQ

BBQ lunch under Mishkon's Sukkah will follow the service from 1 - 2:30 p.m. Registration is required.
 

It's never too late to continue learning and growing, and Mishkon Tephilo offers various adult education opportunities for individuals to explore and deepen their understanding of Jewish traditions, texts, and practices. With classes offered both in-person and online, participants can choose what best fits their schedule and learning preferences.

Chug Rashi
First Shabbat of the Month (on hiatus)
Chug Rashi meets at Mishkon Tephilo after kiddush to explore the weekly Torah portion through Rashi's commentaries. Longtime member Jeff Fleck, who has a doctorate in Comparative Literature, leads the engaging discussions.

Community Scholar Program

Guest Speaker Program

Join Mishkon Tephilo for heimisch, warm, and engaging Shabbat services led by Rabbi Katzan and the Mishkon community. Whether new to Hebrew or well-versed in liturgy, the music and practice of our service will quickly feel like the warm embrace of a trusted friend, enhanced by helpful tips from members and the rabbi. All are welcome to attend Kabbalat Shabbat and candle lighting on Friday or Shabbat morning services on Saturday.

Fiddler on the Roof in Yiddish

In 2018, New York-based National Yiddish Theatre Folksbiene translated the script and lyrics of "Fiddler on the Roof" into Yiddish with English supertitles. For a taste of the New York experience, the Soraya Performing Arts Center is bringing a concert version (not the full production) to the West Coast for the first time. 
 
East Meets West: A World of Jewish Music
