Besides the saying “You can’t see the forest for the trees,” there should also be a saying “You can’t see the trees for the forest.”

In the first instance, your focus is so much on the trees that it stops you from seeing the forest. In the second instance, your focus is so much on the forest that it stops you from seeing the trees.

And that is where Mishkon’s Facebook posts come in! And that is also where I come in as Mishkon’s Facebook administrator.

Those of you who follow Mishkon on Facebook might be aware that I generally post only one item at a time. You may see several one-at-a-time posts if a lot is going on in any given week or month. One-at-a-time  is good because I want each item to have your full attention and not get lost in a flurry of notices. When you receive the e-Mishkon Messenger or go to the Mishkon online calendar, you are served a whole meal at once.  I serve you smaller individual courses, like tapas, giving you room between to digest before you go on for the rest.

As important as the individual message is (and I get information from the Messengers and Calendar), I spend most of my time searching for an image that I hope will grab your attention. And I try to come up with a headline that will do the same thing – but differently. Each enhances and supports the other: the image and the word. I want to wet your appetite so you will have a bite of what is being offered and read about and participate in what is being publicized.  The image and the headline can be fun. They can be serious. They can invite you to ponder a mystery or to solve a perceived problem. And I hope they will entice you to share them on your newsfeed with your own Facebook friends.

Many years ago, I took a class in Word-of-Mouth Marketing. The idea was that the best form of marketing was when one person told another about a product, a service, or something they took part in and thought was so great that they wanted to tell their friends and family about it. This created a win/win. Good information was shared among friends and family, and the item being marketed got an easy boost with the best recommendation that one can have: a personal one.

It’s a Mitzvah to share our Mishkon Facebook posts. And it’s very doable. Start out by making Mishkon a Facebook Favorite [ 1) Click * at the top right of Facebook, then click Settings and Privacy. 2) Click News Feed Preferences. 3) Click Manage Favorites. 4) Select Favorites by clicking * next to a person or page. To find specific Friends of Pages you follow, use the search bar. When you are finished, click *] and then click Share at the bottom of the Mishkon post to YOUR page. Or just copy and paste. Easy-peasy. You can just share, or you can add your own comments about why you are sharing it.

I’m assuming that you love Mishkon — and that you’d like to see us recover and thrive through and past this current Covid pandemic. The best way to do that is for us to reach more people and generate genuine interest in Mishkon, with the goal of increasing our membership.  We’d like to have a more diverse congregation made up of individuals with varied family demographics and ages. We’re here for everybody, and we want everybody to know about us and join us and love us back.

See some examples below of our Facebook postings. I’ve included images and headlines and snippets of messages. My favorites include the leaping person transitioning from 2021 to 2022, the Halloween Shabbat, and the Teddy Bear. I’d enjoy hearing from you which are YOUR favorites. And if you’re not already a Mishkon Facebook Friend, check us out and become one. You’ll be glad you did!
